The shrill ringing of a phone stirred Maura from her heavy slumber, and it took her eyes a moment to adjust to the dim light in the room. Her eyes focused and unfocused on the figure beside her as Jack leapt from his recliner to answer the phone. It must have woken him up too. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she rolled over to glance at his forlorn expression as he answered the phone. His eyes were puffy from sleep, and his hair stuck up at odd angels. She was sure her own hair looked similar, as they’d both managed quick showers before crashing on their respective living room furniture. She didn’t even remember her head hitting the pillow.

“Morning, Chief,” he mumbled over the line, running a hand over his own face to clear away the sleep. “Yes, sir, we slept a little, and we ate. No, no issues here. Yes, we’ll be ready in about ten minutes,” he used a hand to gesture for Maura to get up, and she promptly leapt to her feet.

She reached for her bag, digging for a clean, yet comfortable outfit, trying not to make her eavesdropping too obvious.

“The memorial? Of course, we can be there. Do you need me to shut it down? But I thought- Yes, sir. Of course. I’ll be there.” His face looked lost, angry even, confused, exhausted. “Yes, sir. I’ll report when I arrive. Okay, bye.”

Maura sighed, chucking her sweatshirt back into her bag. If they were heading to the memorial, she should probably take the time to dress up. She reached into the bottom of her bag for an incredibly wrinkled shirt and skirt. “Any chance you’ve got an iron?” She asked, holding up her items begrudgingly. Jack ran a hand through his hair and stomped off to his bedroom to find the appliance she requested.
