Author’s Note: Sorry no upload last week, I was out-of-office. Hope everyone’s feeling lovely and refreshed for the second half of the year. I know I am! Expect a little writing update from me soon. Thanks, as always, for reading xo
They raced then, down the raining streets of town, Maura clutching to her seat for dear life, and Jack gripping the steering wheel like he had nothing to lose. The rain whooshed against the windshield, making the streets and buildings blurred, near impossible to see. He had to have it memorized. Besides, every human in the town was at the meeting, save for the people on Cathy’s list.
“Jack,” Maura asked, “Where exactly are we going?”
“We have to find Burt,” Jack said, “the fisherman who found your car. He’s first.”
She gulped. She didn’t expect to be following the exact tracks of her car, but she prayed they wouldn’t topple of the cliff at this speed. Surely then, they’d never survive the fall. She thought about the rocky shores, having only seen them from afar, and wondered just how treacherous they could be. Burt, one of three old men she’d met at the diner, seemed too old to traverse through the rocky terrain she’d imagined, but then again, he’d been doing it his entire life, just as Jack had been driving those streets. He could probably go backwards with his eyes closed.
She thought of the rain, and on hand clung to her skirt, realizing then how soaked she was and how soaked she would be in the moments to come. “Jack, pull over!”
“What?”
“Pull over right now!”
