Reese hung back behind a shelf in the Children’s Section, pretending to take interest in a Sing-Along tape to avoid the notice of a gaggle of her ex-classmates.
She’d picked the exact wrong time to try the video store, having slept in far too late on a Saturday.
She should have just gone as soon as she’d gotten off work, but she was exhausted from scraping more adhesive from the walls of the third floor, and she slid into bed, still clothes with the lights on, and fell asleep.
So if she wanted to watch a movie this weekend, she was forced to brave the Saturday afternoon foot traffic. Her doctor said it was better to face her fears anyway. She thought that meant talking to Jake, terrifying enough, not avoiding a bunch of bimbos she might’ve called friends once-upon-a-time.
She ducked to avoid Jenn as she swept around from the register, smacking her gum and making rude comments about the man behind the counter.
The second bell signaled their departure, and Reese popped up and hurried to the counter, eyes darting over her shoulder to make sure they were gone for good.
“Well, look who it is,” Jake offered a yellowed smile, leaning across the counter toward her. “Hey, princess.”
